Facebook Places

Facebook executives yesterday announced the launch of Facebook Places, which seems to be taking on popular location based applications such as Foursquare and Gowalla. Facebook Places will allow people to use the GPS on their mobile phones to let friends know exactly where they are.


Facebook PlacesFacebook Places is available immediately on the latest version of Facebook's iPhone app and, for other advanced mobile phones. This announcement is good news for Facebook as geo-location marketing services is getting very hot.


I already use FourSquare and Whrrl to update my activities but I don't have room for a third. So I think that Whrrl will be under some stiff competition with the strong user base that Facebook already has in place.


Facebook users who wish to announce their location to their friends on Facebook would tap a "check in" button to see a list of places nearby, and then choose the place that matches where they are.

Foursquare and Gowalla are fully integrated into Facebook Places - So they are the big winners. One thing dealers will need to watch for is that every "place" in Facebook places will keep a running history of Facebook users experiences at that location. That's 500 million Facebook users. If even 1% use this feature there's a both a huge upside and an equally large downside for car dealers. Give consistently great service and your "Raving Fans" will have a much bigger audience than ever before. But missteps will be magnified more than ever before possible. Great service and strong Reputation Management just became even more important.
