There are a couple of ways on how you will lengthen your water heater’s life and maintain its good condition. The useful tips that will be given in this post are all you need so that your water heater lasts longer than you’d expect. These electric heaters are expected to last at least 15 years, but with the best kind of care and maintenance, it will surely last longer. It can also be a hassle if it breaks down in the middle of a cold season because that is the time when you need hot water the most. Follow these tips:

You need to know exactly where the water heater is

This is important because once you know where it is, you will have undisturbed access to it, which can sometimes be found in the attic or the basement. When the water heater is there, you will not be able to reach it. The same goes if the water heater is in your RV – you need to know where it is.

You need to adjust it to 120 degrees so that you can have a 5% savings on the energy costs for every time you shift the temperature 10 degrees lower and this will lessen the chances of scalding. You have to make 2 feet of clearance around the water heater unless there is an instruction in the manual that says otherwise.

Another thing you can do with the thermostat is to remove the knob first using a screwdriver, and spend time to do this. Do not force it off because the thermostat can get damaged.

Know your water heater

You should know what kind it is because there are heaters that use natural gas, propane, electric, or if it is a storage type. You also need to note down its model and serial number or at least know where this information can be found because the age and gallon capacity are indicated. This is significant if you need to know more about the warranty and it is normally asked by the plumber or the company that will repair your water heater.

Drain quarter of the water in the tank several times a year

This is for the purpose of removing sediments and debris. The cold water supply needs to be turned off and you can hook up a garden hose so the valve can be drained, then run the water into a bucket and wait for the water to clear. In case the water is still cloudy, open the water supply for a bit to mix up the sediments, and then drain the tank once more. This is also going to make unit have a smoother and quieter operation.

Have the water heater inspected yearly

This is going to begin on the top of the water heater and see if there are any leaks or evident corroding on the vales and pipes. For water heaters that use gas, you must check the draft hood and have an assurance that it is placed the right way, which means that there needs to be enough air space between the water tank and its connection to the vent. Check for any form of corrosion or wear found on the gas line, as well as on the piping. See if the thermostat and the area on the lower part, where the gas chamber is, are working properly.

If there is any sign of black residue, charred metal or soot, this means that you may be experiencing issues in the combustion and you need to have professionals service your water heater. If in case you can smell gas, turn off the gas and call a professional right away. If your water heater is electric, check for any signs of leaking like rust streaks or it could also be residue on the upper and lower panels that cover the tank’s components.

Make sure to follow these tips and do not make a mistake of missing any of them because each one is very important. Remember that you wouldn’t want to purchase a new one especially if it is still new because water heaters can be pretty expensive and that replacing one right away would be a waste of money.
