Dominion Dealer Solutions Partners with Microsoft To Create Automotive DMS Platform

Dominion Dealer Solutions posted an announcement on their website today, about their new DMS platform that will be co-developed with Microsoft.  Here is an excerpt of the Press Release:

"Dominion Dealer Solutions and Microsoft have established a strategic relationship to collaborate and create a next-generation Dealer Management System (DMS) based on Microsoft Dynamics AX. The two companies are combining the powerful foundation of Microsoft Dynamics AX with Dominion Dealer Solutions’ extensive automotive retail expertise and assets into an industry leading solution that will enable automotive dealers and manufacturers to enhance customer experience, increase revenue and profit and drive operational efficiencies.

The solution will utilize Microsoft Dynamics AX, along with Microsoft server solutions and tools and the Windows Azure platform to take advantage of the efficiencies and flexibility offered by Microsoft’s public cloud offerings. “Our strategy with Microsoft Dynamics AX is to provide a robust platform for game-changing solutions like the new Dealer Management System from Dominion,” said Christian Pedersen, General Manager of Microsoft Dynamics AX. “The power and flexibility of Microsoft Dynamics AX enables partners like Dominion to rapidly and cost-effectively develop line-of-business solutions that drive accelerated business value for their customers.”

“Combining Dominion's experience crafted through relationships with over 11,000 rooftops and Microsoft's technology will result in a tremendous, forward-looking Dealer Management System,” said Robert Berndt, President of Dominion Dealer Solutions. “The automotive DMS market has been dominated by large, legacy systems that severely limit the ability of dealers and manufacturers to meet customers' expectations and differentiate themselves from their competition.

Our relationship with Microsoft gives us the capability to meet the needs of the market, and more, on day one. Dealers who use our DMS will experience flexibility they never dreamed possible, and they will be positioned for the future of automotive retailing."

A fight has begun for data.  This is not new.  More companies will pop up with solutions.  Dealers must be careful and protect their data.  The DMS and CRM companies are after data that will become Artificial Intelligence in our future.  There will be many more of these companies available at lower costs.  Just ensure your agreements protect your data from "partners, affiliates, subsidiaries, etc."  Have them spell it out, completely.  Don't send your data somewhere without knowing, exactly, where it will land and be used.  We don't want it in the hands of the consumer.  Otherwise, they own your business through the backdoor(s).

A GM recently said to me, "I'm counting the minutes to the time I can get rid of Reynolds and Reynolds".  Sadly, like me, I doubt too many car guys will be shocked by that comment.

Not only do I think that Dominion can pull this off, I think that they are going to come out with a phenomenal product.  Imagine a user friendly GUI and a number of commonly used software programs that integrate with it flawlessly.

Not only should Rey Rey and ADP be concerned, this brings Dominion even closer to a one stop shopping experience.  A lot of vendors should be very concerned.

Anyway, it's not from the ground up.

@ Larry, huh.  Did you watch the video?

Unfortunately Keith Dominion is not the first to go down this path with Microsoft nor are they the biggest. There is way more to the DMS than just building it, actually that is the easiest part.

From a guy who actually did build a DMS I wish Dominion luck, I think they will find they have bitten off a LOT more than they can chew.

I worked for Microsoft for seven years.  This is a big deal.
