With a growing population of caregivers (a relative or friend of a disabled individual who assists the individual with their daily living activities) managers are now faced with the task of accommodating employees who are caring for someone who is ill, disabled, or elderly. Currently, there is an approximate 6.59 million people who are acting as caregivers; it is estimated that the number of individuals over 65 will double in the next to seven to eight years, which means that caregiving will continue to grow, and the impact on businesses will be even greater.

Employee that also act as caregivers affect the workplace when they’re inadequately accommodated; the bottom line can be affected at your dealership as productivity lessens, turnover increases, and health care costs rise.

To lessen the impact of caregivers on the workplace, you can offer accommodations to assist them and keep them focused on their job when they’re at work. How can you accommodate your caregiver employees? Some employers offer the following:

  • Eldercare advocates
  • On-site childcare centers
  • Support groups
  • Flexible work arrangements
  • Compressed work time
  • Telecommuting

While you may not be able to offer all of these options to your employees, some accommodations are better than nothing. It is in the best interest of companies to provide some form of accommodation to their employees, both for employee well-being and also for the profit and success of the company.
