Defensive Driving: How To Avoid Unsafe Drivers During Your Commute

Are you traveling during this busy holiday season?
Long commutes during the winter months with bad weather can be quite dangerous for driving. Maybe you’re confident with your own driving skills, but you can’t ever be too confident in the abilities of those around you. Consider adopting some of these safe defensive driving strategies:

1. Drive Courteously

Adhere to traffic regulations during this frequent travel season and drive with courtesy towards other drivers. By treating other motorists with the same consideration and respect you would appreciate, you may help avoid unpleasant "road rage" incidents. Avoid aggression and be more considerate at letting others merge.

2. Promote Defensive Driving

Many insurance companies offer discounts to customers who undertake defensive driving courses. These classes furnish valuable insights assisting drivers in developing safer driving skills and techniques.  Refresher courses can help you break bad driving habits you’ve been doing for years.

3. Report Unsafe Driving Incidents to The State Patrol

If you do encounter an erratic, unsafe driver along the road, consider pulling off the highway and stopping to quietly report the vehicle to the State Patrol. Many states maintain hotlines for the public to report the specific locations of incidents involving aggressive driving, operating a vehicle at excessive speeds or driving in the wrong direction within a traffic lane.

4. Strive to Remain Alert Behind The Wheel

Avoid driving when you feel sleepy or distracted. By remaining alert along the road, and stopping when necessary, you'll travel more safely. Many vehicles today furnish advanced driver alert systems to warn drivers about impending collisions or unanticipated lane changes. Remaining alert enables drivers to act promptly in response to these types of warnings.

Grim Motor Vehicle Accident Statistics

The Insurance Institute For Highway Safety reports in the United States 35,092 people died during motor vehicle accidents during 2015. Some 64% of these fatalities involved occupants of passenger vehicles, with young men ages 20-24 and senior men age 85 or older constituting the largest categories demographically. The majority of people who died in auto crashes did not wear seat belts. Excessive speed played a role in 27% of fatal car accidents.

As more vehicles include infotainment and high tech options, distracted driving has become an increasing concern. Distractions include texting, cell phone use, eating or anything causing a driver's eyes to leave the road! Remember too, if a collision does occur, you have the option of contacting collision lawyers like those at Lowry Law Firm to request fast, supportive legal representation.

By following these simple guidelines, you'll enhance driving safety. While no one can avoid every conceivable accident situation, practicing careful, considerate and alert driving reduces the risk of sustaining motor vehicle crashes!
