Commercial Piggy Back, Website almost FAIL

I have to admit when it comes to Trucks, I am a Chevy guy. It's not that I don't think the other companies are comparable. It's just how I grew up.

With that said, I was excited to see the new "Chevy Truck Month" commercial. You know the one with the muddy handshake to close the deal. It's great! Problem is, I couldn't share the video because the Chevrolet Truck Month website doesn't allow you to link the video to share it socially or embed it. So I did what anyone else would do. I searched for it on YouTube!

I was elated to find it after you skip past the 5 second Fox Station call in the beginning. And there it was. Just as I was copying the link and getting ready to post it I noticed Con Paulos Chevrolet added there own little addition to the end. Well done guys! I like this adaptation and your commitment to get your hands dirty! Bravo.

There was only one problem. Someone didn't check the website on the screen. Oh No! goes nowhere! It could be anyone's mistake and this blog post is not meant highlight the typo.

We have all been guilty of this mistake at some time. I know I have! Interesting thing that occurred next. I searched for the Con Paulos. (I know! Crazy right!?) My connection to the commercial and the Con Paulos Rep at the end made me overlook the mistake and seek them out anyways. I'm sure I wasn't the only one!

What have you done in the past that was overlooked because the message was stronger than the mistake?

-I don't know if this played on tv or if the mistake was fixed later on.

Fascinating look from the outside in at how a seemingly decent dealership took a great idea and executed it in a half-assed and effectiveness destructive manner... Apparently, the URL was functioning awhile ago, so it looks like it was not a typo, just victim of somebody not renewing the domain. (doh!) Check this out:

Sometimes the dealership managers responsible for such things simply "space out" on informing the TV station that creates their spots of changes in URL or phone number.  A long time ago I learned to always dial the phone number to ensure it goes to the right dealership... But even that can be tricky!

A few years ago I dialed the assigned toll free tracking number for a Courtesy Chevrolet display ad on Consumer Reports website.  The person who answered the phone said "Thank you for calling Courtesy Chevrolet, how may I direct your call?"... Satisfied that I had verified the phone number, I hung up and approved the ad.  After getting billed for 38 phone calls at the same price as eLeads from this agency (Jumpstart), I looked for the calls in our Who's Calling software... Hmmm... No record of any of the calls which were routed by a number supplied by Jumpstart. So... I called that number again... Once again  the pleasant woman who answered the phone cheerfully thanked me for calling Courtesy Chevrolet.  I asked, "Where are you located?" and she cheerfully responded "San Jose, California"!!! My Courtesy Chevrolet is located in downtown Phoenix.

Of course we got credit on our invoice for the billed calls, but how many deals did we lose?  Moral of the story?  EVERY TIME you are asked to approve and ad with a phone number and a URL, make a call to the number and pull up that URL in your most accessible browser! VERIFY DOMAINS AND PHONE NUMBERS EVERY TIME YOU APPROVE AN AD...
