Caution on the Road: Top 5 Driving Dangers and How to Protect Yourself

There is no doubt that driving is the most common way for people to get around. Every time you get into your car, you hope that you will arrive at your destination without any major incidences. However, driving comes with several dangers and hazards, making it important to learn how to react to these emergencies in order to protect yourself.

While some of these driving dangers can be avoided, events caused by wild animals, other drivers and your car can be unpredictable. However, there are several steps you can take to ensure safety on the road.

Engine Problems

An overheated engine or engine failure are some of the common mechanical hazards you may face while driving on the road. Some of the signs of an overheated engine are steam coming from the hood and a burning smell from the engine. Engine failure, on the other hand, will result in repeated stalling, total loss of power or unusual noises from the engine.

Both problems can be avoided by taking good care of your engine. In case you encounter either of these driving dangers, you should pull over in a safe place and call for help. For an overheated engine, you must allow the engine to cool before trying to locate the problem.

Brake Failure

If you have difficulty stopping the car when you brake, you notice that the brake light is illuminated, the brake pedal feels spongy, you hear squealing noises when braking or there is total loss of the brake pedal, you may have some degree of brake failure.

Proper maintenance will help to avoid brake failure. However, if you experience this driving danger, you should stop accelerating immediately. If the brake pedal has some pressure, you should keep pushing it in as you look for a safe place to pull over. You should only use emergency brakes when traveling at low speeds.

Hit and Run

A hit and run is a situation where one car hits another and drives away. While being vigilant and practicing defensive driving can prevent such a scenario, your priority should be to protect yourself when you encounter this danger. You should try to write down the details of the other car, the details of the collision and a description of both the vehicle and driver.

In case you were driving while intoxicated and are at fault, you should contact a DWI  lawyer in Williamson County, TX, or one from your particular area. The legal expert will explain the options available to you and represent you in court.

Tire Blowout

One of the sure signs of a tire blowout is a loud noise followed by jerking of the steering wheel. Preventing this driving hazard will require you to inspect your tires regularly, especially before a long trip.

If your tire blows out while driving, you should try to slow down and pull over. Look for a level and firm area where you can use your jack and change the flat tire.

Skidding out of Control

Road debris, poor weather conditions and wet surfaces may cause your car to skid out of control. To avoid the hazard, you should ensure that your tires are in good condition. Once the vehicle skids out of control, you should take your foot off the gas. Avoid slamming on the brakes or overcorrecting to either side as you try to regain control of the vehicle.

Accidents resulting from driving dangers will not only prevent you from reaching your destination in time, but may also have far-reaching and life-changing consequences. Some of the other preventative measures you must take to minimize the risks of driving hazards include being road ready, remaining alert while driving, following all road rules and avoiding driving while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
