Avoiding A Car Breakdown In 7 Simple Steps

Imagine yourself in the middle of a town after an exhausting shopping trip, ready to get home for a nice cup of tea, and then, your car just won’t start.

As annoying as this can be, many car breakdowns could have been avoided if you had taken a few simple measures at the start. The following tips can help.

1. Keep a careful tab on dashboard lights

With most cars, your dashboard lights should come on when you switch on the ignition.

Check your manual to see otherwise.

2. Make yourself aware of the service intervals

Make sure you’re aware of the manufacturer-recommended service intervals for your vehicle.

And don’t forget to have your car serviced at a registered service center when your manufacturer suggests you should. A breakdown may easily occur when your car’s not maintained as per schedule.

3. Check the battery

If you have an old-school unsealed battery, check the water level carefully and top it up with distilled water if required.

Also, check their connections making sure they’re free from corrosion. Be particularly careful of battery acid because it can corrode the skin.

Note: Most modern cars come with a sealed battery, so this has become less of an issue these days.

4. Check the oil and water levels

You need to check whether these are at the correct levels or not.

Also, make sure of checking the antifreeze content of your cooling system, particularly in the winters.

5. Try to maintain your tyres as impeccably as possible

Make a habit of check the tread depth (the legal requirement is around 1.6mm) and pressure at least once a week.

You may refer to the handbook for the recommended tyre pressure. They should also be printed clearly on a plaque, typically inside the driver’s door.

6. Do not ignore warning lights

As soon as you detect a warning light in your vehicle, park in a safe place and find out what that particular light means.

The car manual may come in helpful in such circumstances.

7. Check on your toolkit

You should be more than confident of using the jack, wheel brace, and spare wheel; and they should always be present in your vehicle no matter where you go.
