Auto DIY: 5 Car Parts You Can Replace at Home

Car repairs can be daunting. On one hand, it feels like you are getting taken to the cleaners whenever you use a professional mechanic. On the other, many people don't know enough about cars to perform their own repairs. You may be surprised at how many simple car repair activities are easy to do yourself. The following are four that anyone with some simple tools and parts from a shop like Reggie’s Garage can do themselves, saving them a lot of money over time.

1. Headlights

The last thing you want is to be driving around with a headlight out. It is unsafe and could cost you a lot of money in the form of a ticket when you are pulled over. On most vehicles, it is extremely simple to replace a headlight yourself. Sometimes you don't even need to use any tools. Consult the owner's manual of your vehicle for easy step by step instructions on how to replace your headlights.

2. Oil Change

Oil Changes can cost a lot of money when you have them done by a professional. This cost can really add up if you drive a lot of miles. The fact is that motor oil and filters are actually pretty inexpensive. You are really paying for the labor whenever you get an oil change. You may be surprised at just how easy this task is, especially on American made cars. You will need a couple of simple tools like a screwdriver to do an oil change on most vehicles.

3. Sparkplugs

Have you noticed that your fuel economy isn't quite what it used to be or your engine isn't running as smoothly as you want it to? This could be caused by faulty sparkplugs. You may be surprised at how easy it is to replace your sparkplugs. They are also extremely cheap.

4. Brake Pads

The brakes system is a key component to the safety of you and your vehicle. You should strive to make sure it is in top condition at all times. Most brake pads can be changed with just a wrench, a C clamp, and a jack and you will be surprised at how much cheaper it is to change your brake pads yourself.

Even the most inexperienced person can teach themselves to perform these tasks. This is great because it will save you a lot of money on routine automobile maintenance. It could also spark a growing interest and cause you to get even more into car repair.
