Auto Alternatives: What to Know about 3 Transportation Methods

Over recent years, the cost of owning an automobile has become much more expensive, and traffic patterns in many areas of the country are heavily congested. In addition, some people are concerned about the pollution caused by the large amount of vehicles on the road. For these reasons, many individuals are considering alternate methods of transportation. Here are a few options, and what you should consider before choosing an alternative method of getting around your town or city.

Public Transportation

If you have decided to eliminate the use of personal vehicle, look into your municipal transportation system. Many communities offer bus service for their residents. Generally, public transportation is reasonably priced to be within most residents’ budgets. In addition, buses are usually scheduled to coincide with common work schedules. Coverage of the area can vary greatly, so research available routes online or through your community’s public transportation agency. In some cases, you may have to walk some distance to a bus stop that serves your area.

Using a bicycle as primary transportation is becoming common in many communities across the United States. Bicycles are moderately priced, do not require insurance and can be used to improve fitness levels, as well as get you from place to place. Heavy traffic can be a proper in some communities, and bicycle enthusiasts are encouraged to wear helmets and be aware of other vehicle traffic when riding. You may wish to spend some time finding the best routes to your usual destinations. Bicycling in inclement weather can be a problem, so you may wish to combine your bike use with other forms of transportation during some seasons.

Motorcycles are increasing popular because they can provide cheaper transportation, while still accommodating busy time schedules. You can find motorcycles at a variety of price points. Insurance for motorcycles is generally lower than for cars, and expense for fuel is significantly lower. Helmets are required in some states, and you can find a range of additional safety gear for motorcycle riding. Motorcycles require regular maintenance, similar to automobiles, and may require registration, license plates and other legal compliance measures like practice rides, a special license, and more.

Choosing an alternative to automobile transportation can help to reduce emissions in your community and save you a significant amount of money. Most communities in the United States offer a number of transportation options for residents, to make life easier and more enjoyable. Knowing the facts about other options can help you choose the right one for your individual needs.
