Airbag Attention: Five of the Safest Family Cars

To qualify for the Institute for Highway Safety’s (HIS) Top Safety Pick category, a vehicle must receive good ratings in five of the organization’s crashworthiness assessments. This year, the top five safest family cars come from a variety of manufacturers. If you’re searching for a safe, smart choice for your family, check out these road-worthy ideas.

Avalon

To receive the top rating for the Avalon, Toyota included automatic braking in this large family car. Along with its abundance of airbags and stability control technology, the Avalon received high marks for its handling. Drivers report that they liked the car’s precise steering and decent gas mileage. When it comes to fuel efficiency, the car receives 21 miles per gallon in the city and 31 miles per gallon on the highway.

Maxima

When Nissan took on and solved the challenge of improving the Maxima’s performance in the small-overlap crash test, the IHS rated the vehicle’s safety ranking as superior. The car also received the enviable rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” because of its automatic braking system. Along with its high safety scores, drivers will appreciate the car’s quick acceleration and precise handling.

Chrysler 200

Once again, to earn the superior score from the IIHS, a car company added automatic braking to one of its models. Chrysler upgraded the 200 to include this safety feature. With its comfortable interior, sporty exterior and midlevel fuel economy performance, the Chrysler 200 is a safe vehicle that car buyers will enjoy owning.

Rav4

Since Toyota added automatic braking to the Rav4, the small SUV also received a superior rating when it was tested for front crashes. In addition to its many airbags, the Rav4 comes with a rear backup camera, USB connectivity for mobile phones, and a four-cylinder engine. For fuel economy, the little SUV gets 22 miles per gallon in the city and 29 miles per gallon at highway speeds.

Passat

Despite Volkswagen’s emissions woes, the carmaker managed to turn out a safe midsize sedan this year. The 2016 Passat earned the title of “Top Safety Pick Plus” from the IIHS for its automatic braking system and abundance of airbags. Volkswagen equipped the Passat with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, which gives it fuel economy ratings of 20 miles per gallon in the city and 28 miles per gallon on the highway. Car buyers will be tempted by the car’s comfortable ride and spacious interior.

If you buy a Top Safety Pick car, you’ll have a vehicle that comes with comprehensive safety features. These amenities make driving easier while allowing you to enjoy your time on the road. Personal injury attorneys at firms like Sarkisian, Sarkisian & Associates PC often see car accident cases and note that airbags can make a huge difference in the outcome. To keep your family safe, make sure you research and test drive any car you look at.
