After the Wreckage: 5 Things You Should do After an Auto Accident

You were out driving on a typical afternoon when out of nowhere, a car comes and hits your car, causing sizeable damage. You're not alone, and according to the Association for Safe International Road Travel, there are over 1.3 million people a year that die in traffic related fatalities. This number is predicted to grow in coming years, and this article will go over the first five things you should do if you find yourself in this situation.

Make Sure Everyone is Safe & Call the Police

Immediately following a car accident, check that everyone is safe and call the police to report the crash. This step is crucial, so they know there was an accident, and depending on your state it may be illegal if you don't call them to report it. In some states, you also have to report the crash to the DVM; you can always call to inquire if you aren't sure and you do have some time leeway to file your report.

Record All of the Details

You should always have a pen and paper in your car and record the details as soon as you can so they're fresh in your mind. You should record:

  • Names, phone numbers, and license plates of everyone involved
  • Time, date, and location of the accident
  • Road conditions, weather conditions, and visibility
  • Each car's make, model, and year
  • Insurance information from all the other drivers
  • Your injuries and damage
  • Your accident account, including a diagram

Contact Your Insurance Agent

You may have a limited time to notify your insurance company of an accident, so tell them as soon as possible. Tell them your version of what happened and ask what documentation they are going to need.

Keep Organized Records

When you talk to the police, insurance companies, and lawyers, make sure you keep good records. Get the badge number of any officer you talk to along with their names, and write down the date and time things were discussed. If an issue arises, these records will help your case.

Talk to a Personal Injury Lawyer

If you are injured in your car accident, contact a personal injury lawyer like James Munafo & Associates PC. They can advise you on anything else you might want to do or keep track of.

Getting injured in a car accident can be a scary and life-changing event, but if you have the right information and the right lawyer, you can help change your outcome.
