Adulting 101: What Every New Driver Should Know

The first time a teen sits behind the wheel of a car they may find themselves overwhelmed by the weight of the options to monitor and be aware of. Before taking your first trip in a car or setting out on a lifetime of driving it is important to be aware of some important tips and tricks.

Make Yourself Comfortable behind the Wheel

Firstly, when you are about to drive a car you should make sure you are as comfortable as possible before setting off on a journey. Your seat is adjustable to suit your size and posture along with the mirrors you will need to stay safe. Alongside checking your mirrors and driving position you should always wear your seatbelt to make sure you are safe each and every time you drive.

Avoid Distractions

Bridgestone reports there are more than 200 million drivers on the roads of the U.S. Joining them as a new driver, you will often feel nervous and unsure of the correct procedures. One of the best ways of addressing this issue is to make sure your attention is focused solely on the road. Remove distractions such as cell phones from view or use a hands-free kit to make sure you have the ability to keep both hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.

How to Handle a Traffic Stop

The chances are you will be pulled over at some point during your years as a driver. Knowing how to handle this potential situation is important and should begin with being prepared. Never get behind the wheel without the proper auto insurance, registrations, and licenses. In the situation itself, the driver should find a safe spot to pull over and turn off their engine. Avoiding mistakes during a traffic stop with law enforcement is important and can be done by winding down the driver’s window and placing the hands where they can be seen. Many problems at traffic stops come from a driver choosing to argue over the ticket when that can be done safely in traffic court in a more controlled environment.

Know How to Look after a Vehicle

Knowing the basics of how to care for your vehicle is important and should include knowing how to change a flat tire. When the check engine light is lit many drivers panic, but this could be caused by a multitude of issues including a loose petrol cap if a stop for fuel has recently taken place.

There are many things a new driver should know and this is by no means an exhaustive list but stands as a starting point. Getting on the road with an experienced driver is always a good option for helping grow confidence and become a safe driver.
