A Handful Of Electric Or Hybrid Car Maintenance Tips That Will Make Every DIY Enthusiast Smile

Do you have any idea how little it takes to maintain an electric car, provided you have a very basic knowledge on automobile engineering? Actually, it seems to be one of the chief causes that make it a favourite among the new-age car owners. A hybrid vehicle, on the flipside, comes with a regular engine, which is coupled with electric motors, thus requiring more upkeep. But matter the type of vehicle you buy, it is necessary to know the most basic ways to take special care of them, apart from that compulsory yearly servicing.

#1: Scrutiny The Tyres

Irrespective Of the type of car you own, hybrid or electric, take car that the tyres of your vehicle are regularly inspected and replaced, as and when needed. Tyre pressure is an important point of consideration. Optimum tyre pressure ensures a good ride, while a faulty one will slacken down the vehicle. With a hybrid car, a good tyre pressure offers the incentive of better mileage, as well.

Also, rotate the tyres on regular basis. This, however, should be done strictly as the user manual of your car instructs. DIY enthusiasts can invest in a few basic tools and manage on their own. If you do not one to take risks, then you might want to contact your local garage; the entire thing will be done in minutes.

Check the spare tyre too, and make certain to change them when the amount of tread reaches a level that it is not safe for driving.

#2: Battery Monitoring

Battery is an important aspect, both in the case of hybrid and electric cars. So give it a check on monthly basis. Check for connections and see if there is any corrosion on the terminal. Also, inspect the water level in the car battery and make sure it never goes dry. Fill in when required.

#3: Lifespan Of Brushes

Like the tyres, even brushes on car motor will need a change eventually. But you can go without replacement until your car has travelled more than 80,000 miles.

#4: Wear And Tear Of Brakes

As a car expert from a leading car electrics Coventry company puts in, the brakes should optimally be checked after travelling every 20,000 miles. You might need to go for a replacement after covering about 40,000 miles. However, regular check-up prevents untimely wearing down of the car brakes.

#5: Suspension!

There is no specific rule of thumb to undergo suspension maintenance. In fact, in major cases, cars rarely need any special care for the suspension system unless the struts and shocks require a change. This again, however, occurs rarely.

#6: Special Care For Hybrid Cars

The hybrid motors need to be looked after. You can do it by following the manual. It is also important to keep an eye on the transmission fluid. Make sure that you replace it, or fill in, as and when necessary. Hybrids come with radiator, so make sure that you flush it intermittently and check the coolant level. Also, the fuel filter needs on-time change for optimal performance.

#7: Bonus Tips

  • Never clean the engine using a water-hose having high pressure. Electronics and water never go hand in hand. Even when you take your vehicle for a car wash, ask them to keep very special care of the engine.
  • When the battery of your electric automobile needs to be replaced, make certain that you do it from authentic dealers only. Ys; it might seem to be costly than that of a generic thing that a local garage will offer, but going cheap in this aspect might cost you dear in the long run. You will not want your car to behave funny within months of battery replacement. Will you?
