7 Safe and Affordable Cars You Can Own for Less Than $20,000

While many dream of buying a Porsche, Mustang or Audi, the truth is that these cars are not always viable candidates, especially if you are on a budget. For most people, purchasing a car is the second biggest investment, so you need to make sure that you are getting your money’s worth.

Fortunately, you don’t have to dig that deep into your pockets to buy a safe and reliable car. Well-heeled bargain hunters can choose from various affordable vehicles under $20,000. Sure, these cars often don’t have all the tech you could want, but they offer solid performance, and they are fun to drive.

However, the price shouldn’t be the only factor you should take into consideration. Insurance, gas, depreciation, unexpected repairs should also be considered since they can significantly impact the price. More than that, safety should also be a big consideration.

Without further ado, here are seven safe and affordable cars you can own for less than $20,000

           1. 2015 Chevrolet Cruze

With a 1.8-liter base engine and a fuel mileage around 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, this Chevrolet is an eye catcher with its futuristic exterior design. Even more, it can boast the fuel mileage due to an engine of four-cylinders, turbocharged, of 1.4 liters to 28 mpg in city driving and 42 on the highway, with 138 horsepower.

           2. Ford Focus

A European design strikes, at first sight, with soft lines on the hatchback and sedan forms. The interior got a sophisticated, slim look as well. You will find features like the interface called Ford SYNC, and an engine of 2.0 liters and four-cylinders that gets to 160 horses. Its mileage isn’t to be ignored either, with 26 mpg in stop-and-go, and 38 on the highway.

           3. Honda Civic

If you’re lucky to find the special HF edition, then you’ll get 41 mpg on the highway, not to mention the 1.8-liter engine with 140 horsepower. It preserves the conservative style of classic Honda’s, either in sedan or coupe edition. There is also a lot of space for the driver and other passengers and extra features.

           4. Hyundai Elantra

Coming in a vivid color, the new Hyundai wears its eclectic style with grace. The sophisticated sculpted sheet metal adds that final drop of posh. 148 horsepower and a 131 lb-ft of torque are what you will get if buying an Elantra. Also, an Active Eco mode will help you get the most of miles from a gallon.

           5. Ford Fiesta

Needless to say, its “Fiesta” time indeed when Ford comes in. A 1.6-liter engine with 120 horsepower will take you everywhere you desire smoothly. It has come as a surprise to see such a subcompact Ford, no matter if it’s in sedan or hatchback body. The surprise is welcome, though since its refinement is obvious. A modern lightweight design with affordable ford custom accessories in Canada and the Super Fuel Economy package are worth the money because it brings aerodynamic improvements and gets the Ford to a good 40 mpg on the highway and a 29 mpg in the city.

           6. Subaru Impreza

Would you like 28 mpg in stop and go driving, 37 during highway cruising, all in a car that has an all-wheel drive standard? Of course, you would. You will get a 148 horsepower, 2.0-liter engine from a hatchback or the Impreza wagon. Subaru Impreza is the perfect car for people who live in tough winter climates, for which traction and security are the first things to look for in a car.

           7. Volkswagen Jetta

If comfort for less then $20,000 is your goal, then here’s a winner. Although it is a compact car, Jetta is quite large and suitable, consequently, for families. Obviously, if you are willing to pay extra, the car will feature impressive options. The choice of engine is quite attractive – 2.0 liter, four cylinders, with 115 horsepower, or a turbocharged four-cylinder unit, 1.8-liter that reaches 170 horses. The latter obviously offers the best fuel mileage - 27 mpg when the car is equipped with automatic transmission.

Of course, this list is not final. There are plenty of reliable cars you can get for a good price. What other cars under $20,000 that provide enough comfort and safety have you discovered? Share your list with other drivers in the comments below.
