4WD: Why Motorcycle Riders Need a Cold-Weather Backup Car

Riding a motorcycle as your primary mode of transportation during the warmer months of the year may be ideal for many reasons. For example, it can be a more thrilling way to travel, and it often is more affordable than driving a car, truck or SUV. However, motorcyclists should have a backup car that they can use during the winter months. These are a few essential reasons to store your motorcycle in your garage in the winter and to transition to a car until the weather warms up.

Your Comfort on the Road

When the temperature plummets, driving even a few miles on a motorcycle can be miserable. Cold winds may gust around you to create an even more frigid wind chill factor. Snow, sleet and freezing rain may also add to your discomfort. Keep in mind that exposure to these conditions could impact your health and well-being. When your body is rundown from trying to stay warm, your immune system may be detrimentally impacted. In addition, there is a concern for frostbite.

The Need to Stay Safe

Strong gusts of wind that are common when cold fronts blow through the area can make it more difficult to maneuver your motorcycle safely. In addition, roads may be slick with snow and ice, and motor vehicle accidents may be more common. Because visibility may be reduced at times, there is an increased risk that other drivers will be able to see you. You can see that many winter weather conditions can negatively impact your ability to stay as safe as possible on the road.

Insurance Coverage Limitations

Read your motorcycle insurance policy carefully before riding your bike in the winter months. Some policies specifically state that coverage is not available during specific months, such as those when snowy or icy conditions are possible. Without insurance coverage, you may not be able to drive legally. In addition, you face tremendous financial risk if you are involved in an accident without coverage. Regardless of whether you have coverage or not, it may be helpful to contact a motorcycle accident attorney if you are involved in a collision on your bike.

If you do not currently have a backup car to use when weather conditions are poor, you can see why you should make this a priority. In the meantime, consider getting a ride with a friend or co-worker, using ridesharing services or using public transportation until you are able to purchase a backup car.
