3 Things to Make Sure Your Children Have When They Learn to Drive a Car

Driving is a privilege and not a right as many think it is. Parents and teenagers often see it as a rite of passage as children approach adulthood. However, it is a very serious undertaking that requires a responsible person behind the wheel, one who realizes that the safety of passengers, other motorists, pedestrians and themselves are directly in their hands as drivers of motor vehicles. Here are three important things to make sure your children have when they become licensed drivers.

A Safe Car
Technology increases exponentially on a regular basis. Cars that are just a few years old may be mechanically sound but lacking in safety equipment that could save lives. Newer vehicles typically have multiple air bags, including side-curtain air bags. They also may have a rear backup camera and automated braking to prevent rear-ending a vehicle in front or getting sideswiped when backing out of a driveway or parking space. Cars also vary in their safety ratings of crash test results that are published by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It is important to invest in a safe car for young drivers.

Proper Insurance Coverage
It is important to remember to add young drivers to the family car insurance policy. Driving without proper insurance can lead to fines, court costs and a suspension of driving privileges. Young drivers already have higher premiums, and needing to file for SR-22 insurance because of a driver operating a vehicle without proper insurance can raise rates significantly. Young drivers that are involved in an accident may also require an SR-22 certificate. Insurance companies like Great Northern Insurance Agency can answer questions about properly insuring teen drivers.

Professional Driver Education
Driver's education in high school should only be considered an introductory course in safe and effective driving skills. The lessons from parents on driving may also be helpful. That is, if bad driving habits are not being perpetuated. Enrolling a teen driver in a professional driving course that teaches advanced civilian driving skills can be a real lifesaver. Such courses teach how to spot trouble and what to do from controlling a vehicle on slippery surfaces to emergency braking and steering to avoid an accident. Professional driver education for a young driver can turn a good driver into a great one.

Children reaching the age where they can apply for a learner's permit to drive a car is both a scary and proud moment for parents. That day when they get their driver's license is a milestone. With the growing rates of texting while driving as well as problems with other inattentive or aggressive drivers, it can keep parents up at night with worry. Equipping children with skills and a safe car to drive helps in regaining some peace of mind as they grow into adults.
