Your car is a valuable investment. That’s why most homes have an entire space dedicated to housing your car to keep it in good condition. Bright sunlight and cold weather can damage not only the paint, but also have a detrimental effect on your engine. All too often, however, our garages become storage units instead, housing a wide variety of small miscellaneous items, rather than our very expensive cars. If you want to reclaim your garage for your car, here are three steps to achieve it.
Much of what ends up taking up space in our garages is broken items or things we don’t use anymore. Garages can quickly become landfills for old appliances, used car parts and broken or outgrown sporting or lawn and garden equipment. Depending on the condition of what is in your garage, you can call a recycling company, give usable items away for free or sell them on Craigslist or call a charity to come pick them up.
Cleaning out your garage is a great start, but unless you create a system of organization for what’s left, your garage will quickly descend into chaos once again. By installing heavy duty shelves and pegboards, you can use the vertical space in a garage to stack or hang things along the walls. You can place things you rarely use on the top shelves and things you use more often on the bottom. You can even get adjustable shelves, so you can park lawn mowers or other lawn and garden equipment under the shelves. You can also buy special racks that allow you to hang bikes, boats, kayaks or other sporting equipment from the ceiling.
One of the reasons many garages become a storage unit for everything but their car is a broken garage door opener. Having to get out of your car and manually open your garage door every day makes it inconvenient to use the garage so many people just stop using it. By investing in a new garage door setup, not only will you be upgrading your security, but you will also make parking your car in the garage convenient again. There are always plenty of options for panel or tilt garage door openers, so finding one that works for you should be easy.
Cleaning and organizing your garage may be a monumental task, but in the end, your car will thank you. In addition, parking your car in the garage will keep it warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, so getting into your car will be far more comfortable. Not to mention how much more convenient it is to bring in all the groceries.
