Google Places for Business Questions and Ideas

I think that most people would agree that Google Places has been a bit of a challenge for business owners from the standpoint that there are constant changes, no real contacts at Google to talk to, and difficult and slow processes for verifications and updates to a Places page.  Even Google has said that they are trying to do a better job of understanding the local business owner's needs from a ground level perspective vs. a 10,000 ft perspective.

Well, it appears the wheels may be in motion. Here is a great chance to get your ideas heard at Google. They have proactively set up a forum, not a tech support page, for people to submit thoughts and vote on each others ideas for a two week period. As of this writing there is one week to go.

Jay from the Places team wrote:

"Wanted to make sure you saw: We've opened up a Google Moderator page to collect your ideas for and questions about Google Places for business. Help us spread the word!"

You can visit the Google Places Page Ideas here. This is your chance to be heard and have your idea for improvement used in a future update.

Here's the four ideas I've submitted so far.  If you like any of them, then go to Scott's link at Google https://www.google.com/moderator/#16/e=ba1ca&v=23 and vote for them!  And submit your own!

"Car dealers often have one address and phone number & can be a dozen franchises. One GP for all runs out of categ; mult GP can be flag'd by G for sharing addr/ph# - & maybe G reviews force the dealer to need one way or another. GP is too generic."Keith Shetterly, Houston, TX

"You need to fix your SERP issues with GP. For example, search "houston gmc" and you get a list of dealers with GPs. Search "houston gmc dealers" and you get the SEO website-based results. Both results should be the same."Keith Shetterly, Houston, TX

"Google Places *itself* should have a GP review site; just one might not work, you might need one for each vertical market. We should be able to review YOUR product and give "star" feedback. "Eat Your Own Dog Food", as we used to say at Microsoft."Keith Shetterly, Houston, TX

"You need to allow more than five categories. And rethink how GP affects verticals. Dealerships may have 10 makes under 1 ph # and address . . . 10 GP aren't allowed for that case, much less sep sales and service at a single-make dealership."Keith Shetterly, Houston, TX

Scott, I really liked this.  Not only did it give me the chance to talk to Google, but it allowed me to see what others had to say.  I hope Google's really paying attention.  I happen to think the best thing they could improve is their customer service (which they keep grading us on).

Anything that Google opens to input we should be bombarding them with ideas. It helps their team figure out faster what works and what doesn't.
