A Promise Made Should Always Be Kept


My office here at home faces the street and across the road I see two men building a home that is every bit 5000 square feet. Everyday no matter what the weather may be, the men brave the cold and the rain to accomplish the task of building the home. Yesterday I walked over to speak to the men to ask them why they braved the elements day in and day out to finish the home. They both just laughed and said that they had made a promise to the owners that they would be in the home by Christmas and once they give their word and make a promise there was nothing not the cold, not the rain, nor the snow that could keep them from breaking it.

 

I thought to myself, “What a powerful message these men have to teach us all.” The power of a promise kept is not only thought provoking but simply powerful in itself. What an unbelievably simple yet powerful message that these two men can teach us all when it comes down to running our business. No matter what business we run, a small mom and pop store or a multi-million dollar dealer group, couldn’t we all learn or build upon the powerful message of a promise kept?

 

If you own a dealership or manage a dealership have you ever sat back and simply observed to see if the promises that you are making to your customers are being kept? If you are not keeping your promises, maybe its time to figure out why, because promises matter to your customers. If your dealership or business does not deliver on the promise that you made, your business will not matter to them anymore. This reigns true no matter what your business may be and more importantly, with our social media crazed life that we now lead, lashing out online about the broken promises that your business made will have instant ramifications to the credibility of your dealership or business.

 

There is no time like the present to take the necessary steps to make sure that your business is keeping their promises, because if you do not the consequences can be so severe that no reputation management company can help with. So if there is one lesson I have learned this week its how powerful your promise can be to your customer and how keeping your promises can help with every facet of your business.

Thank you gentlemen for the comments on my article. Being from the south I too was raised that if you make a promise and sealed it with a handshake then your word was good as gold. I'm glad I was raised this way, because I feel that a man is as only as good as his word and I live by that day in and day out.

Jason, my #1 pet peeve has always been a broken handshake. And there is never a good excuse.

Two things come to mind. First my late Dad. He was a dealer in Detroit that never took deposits. He was from the neighborhood. If you broke your handshake, it was simple; you lost credit with the bar, the bookie and the orthodontist! The way we were raised never left room for the option of not doing what you say.

Next thing is that it isn't just about how you appear. I took a course that explained it this way: When you break your word, your subconscious starts seeing you as an unreliable person. Plain and simple. And the line keeps moving.

ps I know for dealers it can be hard. After 27 years in retail, keeping promises with clients sometimes made it feel as if an un-level playing field...but it still is always right to do.

Jason, truly a well written great post and message.  Isn't it amazing how rare something like a promised kept is in these times.   100 years ago it was a foregone conclusion.  And there were no contracts and lawyers.  It was just your word and a handshake.  I believe my own personal success over the past 30 years has been 'promises kept'.  And as I look at the men and women I consider to be truly successful great people, they are all people who keep their promises.  Thanks for the good thoughts.

You couldn't be more right! As a Franklin Covey Certified Trainer, we function according to the "emotional bank account". It is a metaphor for the amount of trust that exist in a relationship. Just like a real bank, you have to make deposits in order to make a withdrawal. Breaking a promise or not honoring a commitment is a major withdrawal. And again, just like a real bank, if you make too many withdrawals and not enough deposits, you go bankrupt. The relationship goes bankrupt and your account is closed. Keep your promises to your customers and the deposits will flow in and even with interest! Great post:)

Jason, I really like your article and tried to share it, but you have the settings set so that only your friends can see it.  This means it cannot be featured and cannot be shared with the distribution channels... People cannot push to their Facebook news feeds and Google cannot see this page.  If that is what you want, that's OK, but I just wanted you to know what happens when you restrict who can view this article.
