Loading... Be Patient!

The truth is, I think, that www.AutoCon2012.com advertising is out of control.  Now, I *do* support www.AutoCON2012.com, but really that's because I strongly believe in the idea that dealers need great chances for education.  And I think the line-up is very, very good, and better than any other conference this year.  And I think you should go!!

Yes, it's hard to support the www.AutoCON2012.com conference with a straight face because of all the SPAM rules being broken here and on Facebook about it.  If you want to teach dealers about online advertising, don't you need to lead first by example?  Would we tell a dealer that SPAMming is ever the right thing to do?  I hope not.

If you're on Facebook in automotive social circles, you've had a hard time not seeing promotions for www.AutoCON2012.com.  I'm sorry, I meant OVER-promotions:  I've counted up to 58 in one day across the FB groups I'm part of--and which many are also part of, and across several.  It's just the way it is with those groups, many are part of mutliples, and that's thousands of irritants that the conference may well never get over.  SPAM is a dumb mistake, even with good content--because content shared past the author's release is the real pot of gold in social media, but to do that you've got to avoid being so bright in your own promotions that you fade out your point.  And then can't follow the rainbow to the gold.

Well, if you can forgive that transgression (and I think you should), there is great content AT the www.AutoCON2012.com conference that you will need.  Really, I'll forgive much of that SPAMming in order to avoid the same-old same-old at other conferences.  So, attend.

While you are there, though, perhaps you can stop and ask the folks teaching social media at the conference whether this Social SPAMming was the right approach?  And should dealers do it, too?

And then judge that person's service and their session by the answer they give.  Because the truth is easy:  The SPAMing was obviously a dumb idea and set a bad precedent.

Thankfully, the www.AutoCON2012.com conference is still the most valuable conference this year.  Just dim the SPAM and look for the rainbow!  The gold is there.  ATTEND!

P.S. These opinions are mine, not co-opted or paid for, and not associated with anyone else but lil' ol' me.

One more thing.  If you want to see retargeting in action, feel free to visit one of my store's websites...you'll get all the retargeting and video pre-roll you can stand! All you have to do is click here! The sad thing is, we as auto dealers are late to the retargeting party.  Anyone who has shopped on Amazon lately knows what I'm talking about.  Sorry, had to add another $.02

I have to agree with Keith.  This article is about all of the multiple posts (SPAM) about AutoCon on every single facebook group that has to do with the automotive industry along with several other social media platforms.  I respect and appreciate Brian and Ralph's efforts to promote the event and to educate dealers as a whole.  I am a PCG client and believe in education and training.  I am sure that AutoCon will be a great event.  What I don't respect is the abuse of social media to shove the message about the event down my throat.  I thought social media, especially Facebook was supposed to be treated like a cocktail party?  Why were all of my nice conversations with my friends interrupted by the same message 4 times a day for weeks? Doesn't this go against everything you've told us for years?  My decision on whether or not to attend AutoCon was negatively affected by the spam AND the fact that Truecar is a sponsor.  (I won't talk about my feelings on Truecar, but you can read all about it on another post on ADM...it's a great thread)  I know that I am a small fish in this pond, but that's my opinion. Not sure how many dealers have commented on this thread, but at least you have one now.

@Keith - Ha I can handle that!

@Eric - Good point, so maybe we should be switching to WP?

Comment by Eric Miltsch on August 14, 2012 at 11:45am

@Keith - No, they're all still no follow links. (You can see it in the source code)

Probably not anything that Ralph can adjust.

LOL.... Yes I did... {{chuckle}}... However, I am not sending my kids to college, or even purchasing a crumb to put on the table with all the virtual coffee that is "free" in Carbucks!  Glad you started this blog, Keith... Good content in the post and the comments which we can all learn from... The day I stop learning is the day I hang up my Car Gal Stilettos and move on...

And thanks Stan!

@ Eric, I think Ralph has changed that default for ADM long ago.

@ Christine:  Well, now, how's this Best Auto Conference Ever!

Comment by Eric Miltsch on August 14, 2012 at 11:16am

@Christine - good point, however all the links within NING platform posts are automatically tagged with the no follow attribute - no link juice being passed along regardless of the anchor text.

Keith - you started a great discussion here and a lot of points were well said by both you, Ralph, and some ADM members.

But if I am to offer some of my own 2 cents, if you're going to graciously give AutoCon some link juice, at least switch up the anchor text :)
