There is a statement we've all heard over the years in this industry. When I hear it, it makes me crazy. Now, I know that some of you will say that driving me crazy is a short trip, but this one makes me glad that I'm not on a roof when I hear it. I might jump.… Continue

Car Research, a notable CRM company, today takes an EXTREMELY strong dealer-protective and data-protective stance--essentially, they're first to take a strong public stand that they do NOT share your data with anyone and only use the data as a dealer directs. No selling of data! No remarketing to your customers! No condescension! ON A DEALER'S SIDE RIGHT OUTTA' THE GATE FOR YEARS NOW AND STILL GOING FORWARD! WONDERFUL!!!! Here's their email announcement:
January 18,… Continue

Having the opportunity to be on both sides of the fence as a dealer to the actual vendor, I have heard many pitches, demos, product enhancements to help our (their) dealership progress & more.
Is it just business or vendor client relationships? I have been told several times to not get emotionally involved with a client or vendor. As a firm believer in… Continue

We have seen them all plastered across every social outlet, marketing campaign, Digital Dealer, NADA, mailers and word of mouth; many Automotive Sales Trainers with all sorts of tactics, ideas, creativity, amazing closing techniques, to even creating a unique meet & greet.
I have had the chance to be part of trainings provided by Grant Cardone, DealerSynergy,… Continue

I actually got Seth Godin to review this short article here below for me, and he gave some positive feedback (that should tell you how small the world is in the Internet Age, since I cold-emailed a famous author and he wrote back!). It's a few pages on how to look at the articulation of his ground-breaking "Permission Marketing" and the evolution to "Permission Selling" in terms of the Internet and especially modern Social Media. I thought some of the thinkers on here might enjoy… Continue

Banks are unable to differentiate between successful car dealers and the automobile industry. treating all dealers the same, assigning high risk labels to everyone, and looking for reasons not extend floor plans and thereby penalizing the successful car dealers in order to balance out their concern about exposure. Successful dealers that depend on borrowed money to grow their inventories, their companies, and ultimately the economy, are unable access… Continue

Price is always a very sensitive issue, especially during times of contraction, when money is tight, consumers are scared and more selective with their money. The first response (incorrectly) is to reduce price in order to make up for less volume. It is a myth that a lower price will sell your product and a formula for disaster.
Unless you are Wal-Mart or the Dollar Store that have entire business models built around very small margins and high volumes, the lowest price model will… Continue

"A recession is a terrible thing to waste so make the most of it", is what I say. No one in their right mind would ask for this severe of an economic contraction as they prove so painful and inflict so much financial damage (as already has been proven). While no one would ever wish this, even on his best competitor, the reality is there are many benefits and opportunities created by them:
1) Competitors so involved in the problems they can't see a solution if it walked in and laid… Continue

When times get tough we need to push the envelope of positive thinking even higher. Just working a few deals these days can get you down. The credit scores are getting worse(have you seen this). The vehicle of interest is getting older and cheaper. And the dealers are getting nervous, again. Popping in your favorite Car guru in the CD player is always a must for me to keep things in a better perspective. I have a lot of good old stuff and some newer things I pull off of the podcasts. Some of my… Continue

If you've been a dealer for more than two years, face it: you're an adverholic. Anyone who has made it through the auto 'heydays' has spent 30, 70...even 100 thousand plus PER MONTH to get their name out to an unmeasured amount of eyeballs. Those days are gone (and soon many of the recipients of those ad dollars, if not already) but the pain and yearning may still be there.
When you stop advertising for the sake of advertising and start a conscience level of engagement with 'your… Continue

When it comes to the selling of cars today, it's not any easy task. Compared to the past twenty plus years, the cake walk has slowed to a drunk crawl. So what allows some folks in the 'Internet' sales world to deliver 15, 20 or even 25 and more per month? Control.
Staying in the driver's seat is not about dominating a conversation (or having a monologue with a prospect in front of you) or barely raising above a whisper for the fear of the person leaving the lot. Control is first… Continue
