It is possible to drown green peas.
It’s a sad occurrence. And it is rarely their fault they drown.
Green peas, or as they’re known in other industries as newbies, noobs, colts, rookies, freshman, recruits, or greenhorns, are a part of every organization.…

There is a lot of talk going on about car dealership turnover.
It seems that everyone has an opinion about it but not a whole lot of solutions. I am going to do some "REAL TALK" in this post because it is time that the sugar coating stops. I have spent a great deal of time between…
The automotive industry has a sales department staffing problem – and a big one. In fact, NADA has placed the yearly turnover rate as high as 70 percent. High employee turnover rates continue to be a problem for car dealers, according to the 2015 NADA Workforce Study. Competition for talent is fierce. For dealers, this means that retaining your best employees is perhaps even more important than the ability to find and hire new talent.
At Auto/Mate we hire people with car dealership experience, so we have interviewed literally hundreds, if not thousands of ex car-dealership employees. In our experience, here are the top five…Continue

In the 2015 NADA Workforce Study, one of the most shocking statistics to me was that only 33% of all sales consultants hired reached their three-year service anniversary; which means that 67% of sales consultants that were hired quit within the first three years.
The high turnover rate among car salespeople…Continue

There has been a question that has popped up over the years ever since the rise of the internet as a valid marketing venue for car dealers. Should dealerships and vendors teach automotive industry people about marketing or should they teach marketing professionals about the car business?

I am writing this from the airport in Manchester, NH as I head back to Wilmington, NC. Hurricane Sandy has left her mark on the North Carolina Coast and is heading north for what forecasters think will be a huge event. I'll be glad if I just make it home today. Many of the homes up here are equipped with back up generators to handle loss of power issues. Stores were selling out of extra water and batteries as folks prepared for the worst. I think we can all agree this is just being…Continue

Those questions could have good answers or bad answers. The future depends on what you're ready to do regardless of the answer. This also applies to your entire operation. How you answer the tough questions determine how you fare…Continue

I don't know about you but I'm a sucker for classic westerns. Even though about 10 minutes into the movie, you can pretty much figure it out, I always enjoy the "old west" from Hollywood's perspective. It was a simpler time. Or was it?
Back then, at least in the movies, there was always a point when the good guys were surrounded. It always looked like there was no way out. Or, as the cliche goes, "It looks like the end of the line." Yet, seemingly out of nowhere a…Continue
There is a statement we've all heard over the years in the car business. It usually comes from the dealer or a senior manager. When I hear it, it makes me crazy. Now, I know that some of you will say that driving me crazy is a short trip, but this one makes me glad that I'm not on a roof when I hear it. I might jump.
It usually happens when I'm talking to a dealer. We may be discussing a hiring campaign, an idea for advertising, a specific sales practice or even a way to cut…Continue
