The “Throughput” Myth

Much has been written and spoken by the administration and in the media about the bankrupt Chrysler and GM Dealers lack of “throughput” as if it is a big drag on Manufacturer viability. This is used to justify the rejection of “deficient” and “extraneous” Dealers. It was pointed out in the Wall Street Journal recently that Toyota Dealers average 1613 new units per year while Chevrolet averages 643 and Dodge 408. The piece used the word “disastrous” to describe Buick Dealers’ 102 unit per year… Continue

The Almighty Salesperson...And The Almighty Dollar

Somewhere, over time, the thing in the middle of you and a buck (customer, client, deal, contract) was swept away even though that is was business is all about. It seems like the easy ride, free equity, huge perks and general "asleep at the wheel" mentality gave way to a gaping hole the size of a small planet. And guess who allowed it to happen? We did.

You can give excuse after excuse, allow yourself all of the credit in the world, but at the end of the day are you going to make it… Continue

How To Put a Great Domain to Work - Inexpensively

This week I had a number of calls with car dealers asking about Wordpress microsites. They heard that microsites could be an effective marketing option for their business to create "first party" sales leads. The conversation always comes down to one question: "What domain should I buy?"

Since there is a great deal of confusion about buying domain names, I thought I would share by thoughts. Domian names… Continue

GM Internet Lead Alert

I will follow this post up with more information as I learn it, but I wanted to pass this information on and see if this has happened to anyone else lately.

I discovered a huge break in the line of communication this week. I received a report this week stating that we've not responded to any of our GM Internet leads in the past 2 week. The same report sent the week prior rated us a top responder. It seems to flip flop, but our process is hasn't. As I'm digging to find out why this is… Continue

No choice but to participate in User Generated Content (UGC)

Dealerships have no choice but to participate in User Generated Content (UGC) activity on Social Networks

Dealers and OEM’s are no longer leading the brand conversation. Customers are moving from merely commenting on products and service to creating their own messaging and content about their brand and dealership experience. Dealers who do not participate with their online communities risk having their brand defined for them.

Automotive Virtual Reality

5-27-09 Apex, NC

Yesterday afternoon, I received a call from a automotive job candidate. This candidate was from out of state and had 12 years of experience. She now found herself on the outside looking in. I get a lot of these referrals; mostly, they come from managers I have done business with in the past. My contacts (connects) know I will listen and help the candidates who call. As I assessed her situation over the phone, I again gave my "you need to become a social media junkie"… Continue

Orphan Owners are going to kill GM and Chrysler

Has anyone really thought about the defection that is occurring here in the automotive dealership world? Our customers are defecting in MASS to the independent shops already. Did the manufacturers really think that customers are going to stay loyal to a brand when they cannot even get service for the cars?

My local dealership has gone away. Now what do I do?
Do the experts at… Continue

Google Search Results Take Integrity Hit as Scammers Use Long Tail Sub-Domains

Today I noticed a strange trend that may have been going on for some time but today it caught my attention. I was in Google and searched using this phrase “ford memorial day sale” and on Google Page One , there were two listings that were very odd because of their syntax:

Giving the customer what they want a very simple concept

As many of you know by now I sell cars. I have been selling for six years. I worked the internet for a small dealer as well as a large one. The internet customer is a fascinating study for sure. The internet customer is like any other some research for a Month. Some read all of the third party research. Others just want confirmation that a car is available. In the end all customers have one thing in common. They want a price.

The internet aspect of car sales is still its infancy. There are… Continue

I've been spying on you....

OK - maybe "spying" isn't the right word.

I am new to the ADM community. For the past 6 weeks I have been peeking in.....testing the waters. That is one of the advantages of the Internet. You can visit many places, see many things from the relative comfort (and anonymity) of your computer. (I am shocked that I spelled ‘anonymity’ correctly….the spell checker didn’t go into orbit)

For the past 9 years I have been working at a small dealership… Continue

In Advertising, Consistency Pays Off

Your ability to sustain a long-term advertising program shows customers that you're a successful, reliable brand

I recently purchased a new digital TV. Normally, Circuit City (CC) would have been on my list as one store in which to shop, but the struggles the company was facing (followed by its decision to declare bankruptcy) made me nervous.

Free Search Engine Traffic: Are You Getting Your Fair Share?

98% of web surfers use search engines. In fact, you probably have one as your homepage. According to public traffic stats, Google is number one right now, followed by Yahoo!, MSN, and Ask.

You should be able to guess where I am going with this…

Search engine advertising has always been the best way to get visitors to your website; and always will be.

First of all, natural search engine traffic is free; and second of all,… Continue

What If It's Not Your Call? A Twitter With Questions...

With the immenent closing of many competing dealerhships accross the nation, this question seems appropriate: "What do you do when it's not your call?" As in, when it's not your decison to make, what's the best way to influence the outcome? Who's ear to you speak to? How do you make sure you're represented fairly? I know there are many dealers that feel they got the short end of the stick in the form of a letter stating they were out of business.

I try to apply things in a… Continue

Lee Harkins says “Stop Selling the Business”

I asked Lee for his BEST ADVICE for a Service Advisor or Manager today.

What can a service advisor or manager do today to have an impact on their life immediately?

Lee stated, “Service advisors who want to be successful today should stop trying to sell the business.”

I said, “Stop selling the service? Please explain!”

Lee laughed and replied, “I did not say stop… Continue
