Time Highway: Karen Dillon knows what it takes to deliver a value, but she also knows how to stay relevant. Things at many dealers in the country are being held together by 'service glue'. Believe it or not, the auto industry and it's very immediate neighbors have always made the decisions. Whether it's to build large trucks or small cars, release vehicles from production with known problems or not, pay someone $60 an hour for a $25 an hour job, it doesn't matter as it was decided by the companies.
The 'Big 3' haven't listened too well to customers (and in some cases vendors) either, even though some listen better than others. And now, amidst some of the toughest times… Continue

One of the things that typically drives the auto world is new cars, major redesigns and other aesthetic updates that shout "I've got the newest one" to family, friends, coworkers and the world. This week the LA Auto Show hits and hopefully the traffic will too.
If SEMA and LAAS are strong indicators of what's to come, hopefully it's a good sign. SEMA attendance and exhibitor counts were down but it was still extremely busy and took me 15 minutes to cross from the end of the North… Continue

I am currently looking into both VIN Solutions and CDM for my inventory. I am just wondering if anyone out there other than employees from the above mentioned companies has any pros and cons for me on these two companies. They both seem to accomplish the same thing as far as I can see and wondering if there is any "smoke and mirrors" in the presentations. Thanks for any input.

Anyone who takes care of dealerships online advertising you will inevitably have to make changes to your dealership website. In fact, those who stay on top of their websites are far more likely to succeed. The problem is most dealerships do not own their own website; they rent it from companies like Cobalt, BZ, IZMO, Vin Solutions, and others. Thus, whenever a change needs to be made the dealer must rely solely on their vendor’s backend tool if they wish to do it themselves, or a phone tree… Continue

More than ever dealers are realizing that retaining clients and giving them reasons to come back is important, if not their lifeline. Building your business around 'the next up' is fine, as long as you are guaranteed to have a constant stream of people. Challenges currently being faced at retail have shown most car dealers the holes in their business plan and more.
So you have a DMS, CRM, newsletters, coffee and an area for customers to sit down comfortably, and a staff. None of… Continue

This is an agnostic question. You can be a dealership employee, a manager, a senior manager, general manager or dealer. The question is the same for everyone because it's important for accountability. Everyone has had to cut lately and it has hurt, likely a hell of a lot. Nobody in their right mind should tell you to do otherwise in any context.
Now, are you cutting too much? History will be able to tell you rather than you hearing it from me, your ad agency, another consultant, your… Continue

Links links and more links something every website desires, especially in the dealership world where it is difficult to obtain high quality links. In many early link building campaigns where quantity still ruled over quality a lot of crummy link profiles were created. Now, to explain what a link profile is, that is basically the list of websites linking to yours, what pages they are linking to, where the links are coming from and the anchor text used in the link. If you are not familiar with… Continue

Everyone knows the economic downturn has caused dealerships to examine their expenses with a scalpel. Dealerships are literally in a fight for survival based upon their expenses because most incomes are drastically shrinking. We know there are successful dealerships weathering through the storm because of their innovation and adapting to the challenging economic environment.
But how are these businesses succeeding? What is driving their success?

There are many legitimate Automotive marketing experts in the marketplace, and there are just as many snake oil salesmen. Here is one way to differentiate between those who offer real services and those who are looking to make a buck.

Is it true? Is Jeff Kershner floating around industry roundtables and conventions posing as Ralph Paglia? Continue
Apparently it is. There were rumors in the past about this foul play but until now there had been no real evidence. This is a serious offense and what many would call a hideous act of identity theft.
Unlike the show-off or poseur who fails to deceive people, Jeff Kershner succeeds at least for a while in charming his audience into believing he…
