Ness: Smarter Than Google and Yelp?

A mobile app smarter than Google and Yelp? That was the headline that Inc Magazine published this past Friday about Ness, a new dining recommendations mobile app. What caught my eye about the piece is that the CEO believes that dining recommendations are only the start.

Right now it’s only for…

Yeah, What Richard Branson Says: Screw Business As Usual!

I'm tired of hearing it. As you all know I'm a social media guy, different than the rest. I believe that in order to truly harness the business changing aspects of social media that you must first create a social change, not only in your own dealership but within the entire industry as a whole. I'm tired of hearing, "That's not the way we do…

Bridging the Multi-Billion Dollar Certification Gap

There is a huge ‘certification’ gap in our industry that represents a potential loss of billions of dollars by used car dealers.

Consider: over 35 million used cars were sold last year, but fewer than 2 million of them were certified by OEM-sponsored programs. This is a stunning fact given that consumers are willing to pay, on average, a 12-27% premium on a certified vehicle.

Let’s add the numbers up: the average cost of a used…

From the Trenches - Don't squander even one more day

The world is full of people whose notion of a satisfactory future is, in fact, a return to the idealized past.   Robertson Davies,

In mid 2000, my General Manager told me, “I don’t like you.  I don’t like the Internet.  It’s a waste of time.  You should be taking “Ups” not photographs of…

TrueCar - DealerTrack (ALG) Relationship: The words of a DealerTrack Employee

I received this email about eight hours ago from an employee of DealerTrack.  They asked me that I kept it discreet so I will not be mentioning who it was that sent this to me.  It is amazing that DealerTrack's own employees have certain opinions about DealerTrack selling ALG to TrueCar.  Does it mean that DealerTrack's own employees are against this deal too?  I know that I myself could not work for a company that would allow something like this (no matter how much money I was getting…

Sponsored Links on Google Maps Caught My Eye

I want to thank Jordan Scott from David GMC Buick for reminding me to write about this advertising opportunity on Google Maps.  If you haven't noticed this, you can see that this one dealer is paying for a sponsored ad on Google Maps.

This ad is showing up for a map search on another dealer's name as you can see in the search box.  The RED PIN for Davis Buick/GMC is shown near the bottom of…

Man-Up, or Woman-Up: Is TrueCar Good?

It's time to man-up, or woman-up, as the case may be.  State your simple support here, dealers and vendors, with one word:  Yes to TrueCar or No to TrueCar.  I'm tired of this whiney B.S. blamed on fairness--but maybe I'm wrong.  Maybe there is great support of this company?  Or maybe the message of the company is lousy?  Who knows.  YOU DO.  TrueCar, yes or no.  Can you say it in one word?

Me:  NO.…

Instagram Uses In Automotive Advertising

The polaroid camera is not something that I would have used for inspiration in trying to develop a new mobile photo-sharing platform. But that’s exactly what Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, the makers of Instagram, did. Polaroid cameras were big and bulky, and the overall design and feel was anything but sleek. I personally loved the eight exposures per pack. But, what was cool about polaroid cameras, and what Instagram has capitalized on, is the instant gratification…

Can't we just go back to the way it was?

In the wake of this Truecar debacle. It has made me think about how we do business now compared to just a scant few years ago. Here we are at the end of hopefully another good year going into 2012. I look back and have realized that, in the time that I have been in this business it has changed to a point that I wish I could go back to the way it used to be (and I’m not that old). A simpler time, when grandma used to put apple pies out on the window and “Reputation Management” wasn’t a thing…

Honda Tells Dealers Not To Use TrueCar

After American Honda Motor Company asked their dealer network not to participate in the TrueCar online sales program, Jeremy Alicandri evaluated TrueCar's response as follows:

"TrueCar publically implies that American Honda does not believe in transparent pricing for their customers. However, this is merely an attempt to smear Honda’s reputation, as Honda posts MSRPs, incentives, and special programs on their own website. Any critic of Honda’s decision should…

True Car Pricing

So I was searching on True Car for a model in my area and look at the pricing data.

So correct me if I am wrong.

True Car grabs pricing data based on transactions. These transaction prices are based on SOLD vehicles. After I added the Seven Cars in the example for the highs and lows, the "Good Price" does average out close to $37,794.…

Three Tips for Handling Holiday Lead Volume

For automotive retail workers, the holidays are one of the busiest times of the year. The week between Christmas and New Year’s can represent a third or more of the business for the entire month of December. And during this week, the number of online leads that a dealer receives can even exceed the number of visitors on the showroom floor.

This presents a nice-to-have dilemma: it can be challenging enough to serve all the showroom customers, let alone the online…
