Thankful for being an American

I was off work today to attend the swearing in of my wife Chrissy as a United States citizen. My step-son became a citizen automatically. I want to share this with you.

We had 135 people being sworn in from 39 different countries. They called them by country so you could see the individuals and where they came from. It was truly impressive. My wife was from the Republic of China and was there with 5 others from that same country.

The head of Immigration in Chicago gave a… Continue

Going Beyond OEM Website Approved Solutions

There's at least one angry car dealer that is fed up with OEM-mandated website companies. Approved website vendors help maintain the manufacturer's brand integrity and uniformity, but where does that leave you?

While the officially-mandated approach can be quite…

Google Changes The Search Game Again

For those of you who know me, you know how I love to keep an eye on others industries in hopes of bringing great technology and insight to the auto industry. That being said, I was doing some searches this morning as I was working on a new SEO strategy for the Fixed Ops side of the business for Dealer e Process and dealer websites, when I discovered something new AGAIN.

Above the Place Page Listings, there is now Related Searches broken down by Brands, Stores,…

Knowledge is Not Power

I want to take a look at a myth that has been a mainstream statement for years – the idea that knowledge is power. I find as I visit stores and conduct workshops across the country, I meet a lot of “know it all” salespeople or worse yet, negative salespeople who want the customer to take all of the responsibility for not buying a car. I also want to reach out to the people that sit in training nodding their head in agreement or taking a ton of notes, only to leave behind the concepts they… Continue

The Winds of Change

We tend to think of change in the automotive business in isolated terms.  Some say the Internet has destroyed the automotive business.  Some embrace the changes and see opportunities.  But the changes we see everyday are something more than that.  They are truly universal and apply to all aspects of life.

The Internet has made global, local.  It has brought together people, ideas, and cultures from all over the world.  It has brought down governments.  Do you think your small…

Automate Your Craigslist Posts

Posting your new and used inventory on Craigslist is time consuming and downright rough if you’re listing cars one by one. We’ve heard some horror stories from our friends at car dealerships where they spend a whole day posting cars to Craigslist only to get them flagged and removed. On top of that, Craigslist ads expire after 7 days and you’ll have to repost all of them. It’s a tedious process but having a strong presence on Craigslist gives you huge advantages.…

Advancement is Management Minus the Power Struggle

Best piece of advice I have been given as a manager:  Always be teaching others how to be you.  Inspire them to be gunning for your desk and to become you.  Humbly step aside when they replace you.  Without them to replace you, the opportunities of your advancement decline.

Right after that tidbit of wisdom was imparted on me, I was asked to spear head a rather large…

Are Your Digital Assets Optimized For the ZMOT Decision

Scott Brinker, a columnist at SearchEngineLand.com recently posted an article that caught my attention.

Welcome to the jungle baby

Aha!  Did you think it was going to be easy?  Marketing has disposed of several long-time venues such as newspaper, radio and TV advertising.  Sorry to see you go but.... you're gone.  Now you think you have a handle on this Google stuff, but Google keeps changing it.  What's that all about???

You told your Internet Manager to get on Facebook... got that covered, but it ain't doing no good.  Somehow, nothing seems to bring in the ROI.

What's this Push vs Pull…

The Social DVR

TV Commercials have always been "interruption push advertising" . . . and the audience puts up with it.  Social Media is really "interest-based and cooperative pull advertising", and so is built on a more-real relationship with the consumer.  An easy way to see it is as a "Social DVR" where they don't even have to view…

7 Team Building Must-Haves

The coaching and development of sales staff always sounds like the right thing to do, but very rarely is it done consistently and, more importantly, properly. Many times, we assume the best person for the job is the one with a manager’s title. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

Take a recent conversation I had with a sales manager. He remarked to me that one of his salespeople was on thin ice because he…
