Cash For Clunkers has been extended.
If you are one of the millions of Americans thinking that getting a new car through the Cash For Clunkers Program 2009 (otherwise officially known as the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS)) was not to be, and you have one of the qualifying cars on the government's list, you may… Continue

The House passed legislation to inject $2 billion into "Cash for Clunkers" after the administration reported that the $1 billion federal program was running out of money shortly after it began.
The bill, which goes to the Senate next week, would transfer the new money from a U.S. loan-guarantee program for renewable energy systems that was funded under the stimulus package earlier this year.
Lawmakers mobilized in… Continue

Like many of you I was glued to my laptop last night from 8pm until close to midnight. It seemed the news changed by the minute on the Cash for Clunkers (CARS) program as I flipped back and forth between CNN & Automotive News. Today, Tri Auto sits with a full press run-90% of which include Cash For Clunkers info, or are completely centered on the program. Here are some ideas I'm sharing with my clients on overcoming this obstacle and turning it into a win for your… Continue

A sign atop a new car eligible for purchase under the federal government's "cash for clunkers" program, officially known as the Car Allowance Rebate System or CARS, is shown at a dealership in Daly City, Calif.
The government's program burns through its $1-billion budget in less than a week as car buyers swarm dealerships. Federal officials are scrambling to find more money to keep it going.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. government will suspend the popular cash-for-clunkers program after less than four days in business, telling Congress that the plan would burn through its $950-million budget by midnight, several sources told the Free Press.
The Michigan delegation was holding an emergency meeting convened by Rep. John Dingell, D-Dearborn, to discuss their next steps. The U.S. Department of Transportation… Continue

Here are some data entry notes a dealer sent to me to help other dealers who are struggling to enter sales into the CARS system. It seems that the "pipe" symbol is needed to quickly find the cars that are involved in the trade. It comes down to a poorly designed user interface by the NHTSA.
Today we had about a dozen car dealers say that they were pulling out of the program for various reasons. Many are struggling with the compliance and administration. Other just can't seem to get… Continue

When Steve Bogomilsky's lease was up on his GMC Yukon, he presumed dealers would be willing to offer him a monthly payment substantially less than his current $654. Instead, the dealer wanted $1,300 a month for the identical vehicle, more than twice what he was already paying.… Continue

I would like to remind all dealers on this forum to get their Cash for Clunkers sales posted in the NHTSA system for reimbursement as quickly as possible. The reason is simple; by keeping these transactions offline, the NHTSA record keepers can not properly account for the depletion of CARS funding.
In a survey I conducted today, only 35%of the cars… Continue

As you may know, I do my best to keep car sales fun. After drowning myself in the mind-numbing Cash for Clunkers docudramament, I need a break.
I would like to hear about your first car -
What was it?
Would you still like to have it?
What happened to it?
Are you willing to share a (clean) story about your time with your first vehicle?
I will share my story - my first car was a 1969 Chevy Camaro Z28 - silver - 100% original. It was my grandfather's pride… Continue

I have been getting emails from consumers that are claiming that the EPA MPG rating are changing on www.fueleconomy.gov, day to day. For some, this meant that their car now qualifies. For others, their car now was disqualified.
This is SCARY.
I strongly encourage all dealers to print screen the fueleconomy.gov website when you look-up a trade-in and date and time stamp the print-out. You do not want to be in the middle of a data change that would disqualify a trade that… Continue
