If You Want to Change the Job Your People Do, Change the Job You Hire Them to Perform

In early October of 2008 I wrote the following. I was getting home from the J.D. Power and Associates Automotive Internet Roundtable in Las Vegas, where a wealth of great information was presented. The best thing I learned from this… Continue

This email is not for the faint of heart or for people who can't face the music or stomach the truth. In short, don't read another word of this email unless you want the unvarnished truth about your business and your sales.
The majority of businesses this year will decline in sales and in profits just as they did last year. And, even worse, nine out of ten people will come up with some excuse - in most cases, a totally lame one - about why their business… Continue

Over the last few months I have been testing the value of publishing car inventory listings to a group of free websites. The idea behind this test was to measure the effectiveness of the time needed to post cars based on the increase of:
1. Car Sales
2. Web Traffic
3. Inbound Links (for automotive SEO purposes)
This is "Part One" in a series that I plan to write tracking the value of free car listing services. This is the introductory article with some initial… Continue

If you've been a dealer for more than two years, face it: you're an adverholic. Anyone who has made it through the auto 'heydays' has spent 30, 70...even 100 thousand plus PER MONTH to get their name out to an unmeasured amount of eyeballs. Those days are gone (and soon many of the recipients of those ad dollars, if not already) but the pain and yearning may still be there.
When you stop advertising for the sake of advertising and start a conscience level of engagement with 'your… Continue

Many people that are concerned in all types of businesses talk the same talk today: waiting. Some have been waiting for a new administration, some for a car czar, some for banks to loosen up, some for 'the bottom' and some just for the fun of waiting.
When you're in business, you can't wait especially when it costs you money. In the car business, it's been about waiting for people 'to really go online' or for the 'next up', or even the holy grails of 'cheap gas', 'more hybrids' or… Continue

In April 2008, I blogged about a pretty dramatic change in strategy
for General Motors PPC advertising. They effectively took away all non-branded keywords from all of their automotive brands: Chevy, Pontiac, Cadillac, Buick, etc. Instead, they used GM.com as the URL to own all of these keywords like: small cars, mid size sedans and crossover vehicles.

From time to time I go to different dealers websites and submit leads because I'm curious about what ILM/CRM software they use and/or what they are doing for their lead follow up process. So I get random emails all the time.
Yesterday I got an email from a dealership in New York (screen shot of email at the bottom). It was just blank!
Why? Because gmail and most email programs don't show images
unless you click the "display images" button. (more about this… Continue
