I`ve been in auto Sales for 21 years.
Starting out on the floor in the "trenches" for quite a few years, eventually I was given an opportunity to become a Used Car Mgr/Buyer & honed my craft for several years, buying & selling on-line.

Here`s a funny story; Autotrader.com invited me to sit on a panel several years ago, as 1 of 5 successful Internet individuals. We sat in front of about 80 or so dealers that weren`t signed up with AutoTrader. It was set up in a sort of "town hall" meeting with the AutoTrader Reps walking around in the audience with microphones. Soooooooooooooooo here`s the funny part, I sat in as the 4th man in the line-up out of 5 & AutoTrader wants us to tell the audience a little about ourselves. So the first guy tells the group that "I`m so & so & I own 4 dealerships" & I`m leaning over looking down the line-up thinking, "Hmmmm... an actual Dealer/Owner is here", so the next guy proceeds to tell the group that, "I`m Bill Johnson & I own 2 dealerships" & I thought, "Geez, another owner now
I`m starting to feel a little nervous about being up there!~~lol. Okay now the 3rd guy in the line-up sitting right next to me introduces himself to the audience & says, "Good afternoon I`m Rick Darson & I own 5 dealerships"! I remember feeling embarrassed right about at this point, so now it`s time to introduce myself. I look down the table at all of the dealers & there was a moment of silence as they all stared back at me......... not really knowing what to say, because I was very surprised to be sitting up there with all of these Dealers/Owners, I turned to my mic & said to Lloyd Hecht(Our then AutoTrader Rep), "Hey Lloyd, are you sure I`m suppose to be up here? `Cause I don`t own any dealerships?!"!~ With that, the entire room & everyone on the panel burst into laughter! Now the fifth panelist, sitting to my right, whom seems to be around my age at the time & has been joking & having fun with me the whole time up there introduces himself.
I figured he was a Rep like me doing the Internet gig at his store. Well he starts out by saying "Sorry Ken... I`m Jim so & so & I own 2 dealerships"!!!~~ I turned to the mic & said, "Can somebody please tell me what the heck I`m doing up here with these guys?!"~ & the room broke into another huge burst of laughter. It was a very eventful experience that day & one that I enjoy sharing.


I`ve always attempted to take things to another level & with that, I became heavily involved with our websites, developing ways to expose our dealership on the `Net via videos. The idea of the videos was completely done on my own about 3 years ago. I spent hours,days & weeks trying to figure out what it takes to get the videos up & running perfectly on the Internet & am 100% completely self-taught! I have no formal training at all(geez..... maybe I should`ve went to college~lol)

All of our videos are produced & edited in our dealership without the assistance of any 3rd party vendors. Very effective both in cost & overall sales results.

Currently responsible for updating all websites with current advertisements, which also involves creating Ads using Flash. Monitor CRM daily progress. Produce effective E-mail marketing campaigns. Intervene with Sales Reps internet Clients & develope new strategies of engaging the client via email. Responsible for all video production work, this includes shooting, developing, performing & necessary coding.

Constantly seeking new methods to enhance my "Guerilla Marketing Strategies".

I agree i think that custom videos are the way to go. However, the slide show style video is a good solution for dealers who do not have the resources to create custom a walk around as you have. Also, the closed captioning, podcast, and lead sources on the side videos argent too shabby either.

As far as other video content, such as staff intros there is value to i-. you have to look at the big picture. There is a direct relationship between time spent on your site and your lead generating power. Features such as video, and virtual tours are sticky content, they keep people on your site. The longer someone is on your site your lead opportunity goes up.

I'm glad we are on the same page on "speed" though. That is something that I emphasize as well. A feature I always brag about too when it comes to the sites we build is the extensive back end controls. All the changes happen in real time-- taking cars off the site, making specials, creating custom pages etc. I'm like you - I want it done NOW! :)

LOVE the new video! I want to see the video listings on your inventory pages though-- that would really increase your time on site. As you know video is HUGE! Something that we ( Dealer-e Process) do is integrate video right into a website so you can have a video on each and every car in you inventory, you can also do video staff pages (which you would be a pro at) and video customer testimonials. I will send you some great info about the importance of having all of this video content within a lead generating site.
