Two days ago Mercedes-Benz gave the public its first look at the company's upcoming pickup truck in the form of a new "X-Class Concept". According to Mercedes-Benz, the new X-Class will be the world's first true "premium" pickup truck.

Their new light duty midsize pickup truck platform was introduced by Mercedes executives during a spectacularly produced "Reveal Ceremony" in Stockholm, Sweden. The new X-Class marks Mercedes' official entry into what is considered by many industry observers as the most competitive, regionally driven, owner loyalty impacted... and, most profitable vehicle segments in the auto industry.

"With the Mercedes-Benz pickup, we will close one of the last gaps in our portfolio," Dieter Zetsche, Daimler chairman and head of Mercedes-Benz cars, said in a statement. "Our target: We want to offer customers vehicles matching their specific needs. The X-Class will set new standards in a growing segment."

In the US, where the Mercedes X-Class would compete in the midsize pickup segment, that segment is growing at more than 20% a year! This medium sized class of pickup truck also dominates sales in Argentina, Australia, and Brazil... With the inevitable after-market optional .50 caliber machine gun rooftop mount, look for these X-Class trucks in an ISIS propaganda video clip soon.

Initially, Mercedes-Benz does not plan to offer the X-Class for sale in the US when the truck begins production in late 2017.

Mercedes will consider entering the US market at a later date... Why the delay? The US pickup truck market is fiercely competitive and currently dominated by Ford, General Motors and Chrysler. But, like other Mercedes models withheld from the US market in the past, when MBUSA's 325+ Mercedes-Benz dealers start clamoring loud enough for an American version of the X-Class, you can bet the Germans will give it to them... Especially if the Dollar/Euro exchange rate improves for German built products any time soon.

Where will Mercedes initially start selling their X-Class?
Mercedes is expected to offer the X-Class in Europe, Latin America, South America, and Africa. No official pricing information for the X-Class has been released... Yet.

I am asking for your opinion on the following issues, or any other issues you see regarding the Mercedes X-Class:

  • As competitive as the Pickup Truck Market is, do you believe Mercedes-Benz will be successful?
  • Will they have an impact in the marketplace?

Here's a closer look at a few more images of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickup:
