For the many social media super stars on ADM this may be a regular occurrence, but it was the first time I have personally experienced getting a message from Facebook that somebody has too many "Friends" and so Facebook was shutting them off from new Friend requests... Have you experienced this?

The only other place I have run into this has been Plaxo, which shut me off from accepting any additional Friend requests when I hit 1,000... Which might be good, or might be bad... What do you think?

Does limiting the number of "Friends", "Fans", "Followers", "Subscribers", "Stalkers", "Pokers" or whatever a social network calls their mechanism for connecting one membership profile to another enhance or detract from the value of that social media or the network itself?  Does limiting each member to 1,000 members such as what Plaxo does force the users to restrict their membership requests, or the ones they accept to people they have actually met or communicate with on a regular basis?

In the case of Plaxo I have tried disconnecting from users I have not met in person whose invitations I accepted before knowing their was a 1,000 connection limit... The process is painful and arduous, requiring that each individual user I disconnect from be reviewed and then the disconnection itself confirmed several times... The time it takes has driven me away from using Plaxo, which is a social media I once considered high value because of their technology such as integration with Outlook and apps, such as their de-duping app for Outlook.

All that goodness has been tossed into the dumpster because of the combination of limiting me to 1,000 members (which is OK) without making it easy to cull the connections to lesser relationship profiles so that I can accept friend requests from other Plaxo users that I am more closely connected with outside of Plaxo...

I can understand requesting too many friends, but how on earth would it be a problem to have too many friend requests? I like Twitter how after a while it only lets you follow so many people compared to how many follow you. How bout http://twitter.com/Shitmydadsays? Following 1, 1.3 million followers?
