I previously worked for eLead CRM as an Account Manager and SEO specialist and I currently work for Honda of Annapolis as a Digital Marketing Director.

My dealership currently uses TK Carsites as a website provider, and each tab on the website directs to a different website. I understand how a keyword laced into a URL is effective, but doesn't it cause some damage as well?

In terms of SEO, I have always found DealerOn and Dealer.com to be the most effective. I'm not a big fan of TK Carsites, but the sales manager absolutely loves them. Can someone explain to me the rationale behind their design?

Keywords in the url used to have a massive benefit when it came to Google SERP's, however since the penguin/panda update it is not as big a ranking factor as it once was. 

I see what you mean on your website, noticed when I clicked on the service tab it brought me to a different website. Not something I have ever seen a dealer do, but the way they have it laid out shouldn't hurt you at all. I'm sure customers haven't noticed, as they would need to keep a watchful eye on the URL at the top, have you spoken with TK and asked what the benefit is?

I honestly never understood that. As previously mentioned, it's an old SEO tactic that is actually rather sloppy in design. Who really wants a customer jumping from site to site.

I'm pretty sure it was all about POD when that was the popular acronym of the month ...... but I agree that that ship has long sailed as far as that being a viable website SEO strategy (I'm not going to lie, I even had one when I was an Internet Sales Director). I agree with you as Dealer.com and Dealeron providing the easiest 2 platforms when working on with Cobalt and their new Flex Sites bringing up a close third ( Not a pitch Manny I promise just an honest professional opinion ). I agree with Manny that STRATEGY HAS 100% TO DO WITH RESEARCH, AUDITING AND PUTTING IN TIME / EFFORT . That being said as a person who has his hands in every single automotive CMS on a daily basis some are easier to work with and if you look at the data some just perform better Organically, I don't know if it's their markup or what but they do!

Brian Mello is correct when he stated that in the past, domain names regardless of content quality, ranked for important keywords.  TK Carsites called their website architecture "Power of Five" because they gave dealers five website URL's that looked like one website, to the visitor.

At one time, this was a great strategy but today the architecture does not give dealers any real lift.  In fact it makes using Google Analytics and tools like Dataium practically impossible to use.  Today, Google wants to see one, high quality website with social signals, fresh content, and internal linking.  The Power of Five, makes it seem that consumers don't like the main URL, because they leave to go to other "sites".

KPA, who bought TK Carsites two years ago, is now moving to collapse all five sites into one.  Their new "Connect" platform is being rolled out along with a new inventory listing module.  This will resolve the current issues I have with their architecture.    The people at KPA are really good folks however this update to the new Connect platform is over a year late and I hope when it finally arrives that it is what dealers need to have a competitive edge once again.

Ask your KPA representative when you can move to the Connect platform and a single URL.

I think the most shocking thing about this post is the fact that TK Carsites, a company that is supposed to be a leader in Social Media, would let a post like this hang out there with no response…
